Hands-down
the best investigative news video that the web has to offer,
plus they post a daily news feed that pulls some of the most
important, often controversial news articles of the day, every
weekday. Visit often The
Guerrilla News Network (GNN.tv).
Common
Dreams (commondreams.org) is a progressive news feed that
is a wonderful read each and everyday. Visit
Often.
On
the Media is an absolutely fantastic weekly show on NPR
that covers the media. Bob Garfield and Brook Gladstone will
make you smile. Perhaps the coolest thing about the show is
that you can download each episode in it's entirety as an
MP3 and listen to it at
your leisure in very acceptable quality.
If
you only watch one hour of television a week, make sure it's
the hour that your PBS affiliate airs NOW
with Bill Moyers and David Brancaccio. NOW is easily the
finest news program on TV, featuring un-matched in-depth covering
of issues, brilliant guests, and perspectives seldom heard
on national television.
Between
the Lines is a weekly radio show which is also awesomely
available as an MP3 download each week. They cover under-reported
news stories each week, as well as digging in deeper to stories
of import.
StayFree!
Magazine is a great read. It comes out about once every
10 months, and features thematic issues. Their Conspiracy
Issue was one of our recent Favorites. They also sponsor
Illegal
Art, and have events (typically in New York City). Sure,
it doesn't come out often, but subscriptions are very affordable
(especially for students or even cheaper if you only want
the PDF). Take it from us, it's fun to StayFree!
One
of our favorite sites for one of favorite magazines, Adbusters
(adbusters.org). Several of our Wompedy Productions have
been featured on Adbusters TV website.
Incredibly
thorough and insightful nonprofit, media watchdog organization
Fairness
and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) (they also produce a
weekly radio program, which can be downloaded as an mp3, called
Counter Spin).
Make sure to sign up for their free newsletter, and do please
subscribe to their amazing periodical "Extra!".
You'll thank yourself.
In
addition to On the Media, Between the Lines, and Counter
Spin, we feel we should promote Wompedy Club Co-President
Daniel's weekly music show The
Sounds in My Head. Each
week he plays music that you might not have heard, but are
likely to enjoy.
Learn
all about digital video and editing from RES
Magazine, and now every issue comes with a DVD featuring
shorts and music videos.
Feminista
is a cool feminist website with great articles. They describe
themselves this way: Feminista! is an online journal known
internationally for its content and capacity for networking.
Feminista! is a journal of art, literature, social commentary,
philosophy, with, humor, and respect, and is currently published
on a semi-regular basis.
Dollars
and Sense is a economics periodical that stands out in
the crowd of fat ugly white guy rags. If you've ever read
the Wall Street Journal, you owe it to yourself to read Dollars
and Sense, the magazine of economic justice.
We
listen to National
Public Radio. Not only do they have pretty decent news
from great shows All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition,
they also have some of the best entertainment programming
with shows like Prairie
Home Companion and This
American Life. If you own a car you should definitely
have your NPR affiliate as a programmed button!
When
we can afford it, we love watching the informative and entertaining
documentaries from BullFrog
Films. The Wompedy Club has purchased some of their films
for group viewing's. Affluenza,
Cities,
and Billion
Dollar Crop were excellent to watch as a group.
Michael
Moore is a great film maker, and his books and tv shows
are always a pleasure as well. His website is updated often
and his mailing list is usually a good read.
Errol
Morris is one of the best documentary makers ever. ALL
of his feature films and episodes of his tv show First Person
need DESPERATELY to be released on DVD. Send him an email
and tell you agree.
Four
Seasons Productions is a relatively new production company,
putting out what has come to be a fairly unusual kind of documentary:
progressive christian / religious materials. The idea of "liberal"
being odd next to "christian" is of course paradoxical
(heeeello, JESUS!) but
never the less, one of the sad things to come out of the last
30 years or so is that the right-wing has so successfully
co-opted christianity. At least these folks are giving some
air-time to the opposing view. And doing so very well at that.
Crisis
of Faith is worth anyone's time, but particularly to watch
with fellow church-goers.
Stop
the School of the Americas! Ever wonder where terrorists
come from? One place is the School of the Americas.
Amnesty
International is one of the most respected and important
human rights organizations in the world. Swing by their site,
and become a member today. They need your support, and so
do the millions of people who reap the benefit of their efforts
worldwide.
The
Association
of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is a
national nonprofit that organizes the working poor to push
for low income benefits in many cities.
Public
Citizen has probably made your life longer. From auto
safety to environmental protection, court battles to keeping
an eye on law-makers, Public Citizen is there looking out
for your best interest. And it has been since it was founded
by Ralph Nader in 1971. Stop by their site and look for ways
you can help, or just sign up for their mailing list and they'll
keep you informed about important happenings.
MoveOn
is absolutely fantastic. Go sign up (if you're not already
one of their 2 million + emailees) and they'll send you emails
about important issues and let you know who to call, who to
write to, and when, to make sure that 'we the people' aren't
left out of the debates that shape our lives and laws.
TrueMajority
is a lot like move on, but perhaps with a better sense of
humor, or at least a yummier founder. Ben Cohen (of Ben and
Jerry's Ice Cream fame) is behind this growing organization
which seeks to unite the true majority of Americans. You know,
the majority that want a healthy environment and laws that
promote social justice and all that good stuff (cause polls
show we ARE the majority).
WFMU
is what radio should be. The original and the best freeform
radio station in the nation. And you can listen online from
anywhere in the world. We really like Radio Thrift Shop, a
weekly show by Laura Cantrell, but it's good listening any
time of day or night. Listen and learn about music that will
absolutely never be played anywhere but here.
Learn about the world's many countries from
the CIA
World Fact Book. Maps, population stats, economic stats,
and countless other bits of info they've got it all.
The
Onion is America's finest news source. We feel obligated
to tell you about them, because you're bound to have never
heard of them. I mean, after all, you're reading our Links
page, so you're clearly on the internet for the first time
and are not familiar with things like The Onion. Ummm. Yeah.
Unamerican.com
has very funny t-shirts and stickers. Lots of stickers. Lots.
We
think you should get your computers, software, and of course
iPods from Apple
Computer.
