Those 8 speeds are all contained in this rear internal 8-speed hub. This is quieter, lighter, and requires less upkeep than a traditional external gear mechanism, and on top of that you can change gears while stopped, which doesn't usually work so well on normal bikes. Also, with standard gears your chain moves around too much to allow for a chain guard. | |
